Recovery/ 12-Step Series – Laws of Karma and Dharma

How to Walk the 12 Steps with the HuMethod™ Article 16

How Success Became Mine…

When I Understood My Karma & Started Living My Dharma

By Certified Life Coach Deborah Giddings

Namasté soul friends,

Success is defined by “The accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” For so much of my life I was wandering aimlessly and didn’t have any purpose.  I had a job and made a living.  I could pay my bills and even had some money left over.  But I never felt successful.  My ego-mind kept telling me that I wasn’t enough, I didn’t have enough, and I didn’t do enough.  Looking back, it feels as if I’ve been on this journey of finding success all of my life.

As I started to study, practice, internalize and emotionalize (S-PIE) the HuMethod™ exercise and learned the Laws of Karma and Dharma, I began to understand that I could change how I was living.

Another name for the Law of Karma is the “Law of Cause and Effect” or “The Law of Sowing and Reaping”.  These laws state that for every action I generate there is a force of energy that returns to me its kind; therefore…what I sow, I reap!  As long as my actions were riddled with pain, fear, and mistrust, the fruits of my labor will mirror my fear-based actions, and this is exactly what I experienced. When I first came into Recovery, I saw the world through my fear-based ego-mind and thought that people were doing things to me, and that no one could be trusted.  Taking a 4th Step along with the HuMethod™ Dis-creation exercises, I began to bring my fears to the surface and understand the drivers that kept me operating in fear.

To be a success, I needed to surface my past and either “Experience It, Transform It, or Transcend It.”  I was an expert at experiencing it because every action I made came back to me and so I was always saying “Why is this happening to me…Again?” As my emotional courage began to develop from my recovery work, I was able to step outside of my ego-mind and view my dramas as a Witness/Observer.  I could then ask the God of my understanding to show me the blessing.  Step 11 tells me to seek through prayer and meditation….asking only for God’s will for me and the power to carry that out.  So I’d pray asking “what can I learn and how can I grow from this experience?”  I did this for many years and one day I realized that I was living in a friendly Universe and that everything that happened was not being done to me, it was being done for me for the healing of my soul.

Practicing the Spiritual Distinction Meditation many times a day for a few years has enabled me to clearly define the distinction between my Self and my Karma.  The reason is that by meditating, I can transcend my Karma because meditation trains and disciplines my Ego-mind.  I can be in the world, but not of it.  The dramas of my life don’t have any real power over me because I can look at them as a movie, from an emotionally detached state of consciousness.

Statistics show that unfortunately most people spend over 70% of their lives “making a living” doing work that they dislike.  I was one of those people.  Don’t get me wrong, there were moments of feeling like I had accomplished something, but the fears that I had behind every accomplishment quickly overrode any good feeling that I had.

The Buddhist term, “Right Livelihood”, which originates within the Buddha’s Dharmic teaching of the Eight-Fold Path means “to follow the way leading to the cessation of suffering (dukkha) and the achievement of Self-awakening.”  When a job that I held for 24 years ended, I didn’t have a clue of what I was going to do to ‘make a living’.  Following my Dharmic path seemed to be a nice dream to strive for, but my ego mind kept telling me “you’re living in the real world and you have to work hard to make money”. So I prayed and meditated (a lot), and became willing to walk the path of inner peace and not put a time constraint and just, for the first time in my life, ‘go with the flow’.  What a blessing I received when I opened myself to the unlimited possibilities of the Universe rather than using my great ‘thinking’ mind to try and project my future.

Being a Certified Spiritual Life Coach is my Right-Livelihood.  It took work to get here, but I kept putting one foot in front of the other even when my ego mind kept telling me to ‘go get a job’.  The rewards I’m reaping are far beyond what my ‘mind’ could have ever projected.  Today I get to work with other like-minded Spirit First souls on a daily basis.  I am successful because I’ve been trained to determine my client’s most important self-help objectives and implement systematic, empowering exercises to target their specific goals so they can create the permanent behavioral change they desire.  I’ve learned and can now facilitate advanced adult life skills such as mature boundary protection, validating feelings as well as relationship and self-parenting mastery techniques so my clients can live highly functional, emotionally mature lives.  Does it get better than that?

Following these Laws of Karma and Dharma, I’ve made peace with the fact that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing for my highest spiritual good – even when it doesn’t feel good.  I know today that in a perfectly evolving Universe it cannot be any other way.  I am successful today because I have purpose.
