Recovery/12-Step Series – Step 12

How to Walk the 12 Steps with the HuMethod™ Article 13

Having Had a Spiritual Awakening as a Result of These 12 Steps
We Tried to Carry this Message to Others and to Practice
These Principles in All Our Affairs by …

Studying, Practicing,
Internalizing and Emotionalizing
To Be My Message

By Certified Life Coach Deborah Giddings

Namasté soul friends,

I’ve learned that every time I’m given the opportunity to display a new behavior, and I actually choose to respond differently than I ever have before, I’m having a Spiritual awakening.  My Spirit is waking up.  This means that I’m starting to become more conscious of when my Ego-mind is trying to drag me into my old story lines and when my Spirit is guiding me so I can make a different choice.

The words “as a result of these steps” come right after “having had a spiritual awakening”.  This is the HOPE (Heart Open Please Enter) being fulfilled from Step 2 that I am being restored to sanity.

To become Self-Mastered, Holistic  Learning Center has a Self-Mastery Training Mantra which is the foundation for all of the HuMethod™ exercises.  This Training Mantra is “Commit, Study, Practice, Internalize and Emotionalize” (acronym S-PIE).

Before I can begin to “carry the message” (which for me means to “be the message”) then I have to Commit to undertaking my own Self journey.  At the end of each meeting we say “Keep Coming It Works”.  Every time I go to a meeting I re-commit myself to my journey – Deborah 101 or Deborah-ology.  By committing my Self, I am learning how to manifest an abundant life; how to unconditionally love and accept myself; and how to fulfill all of my emotional dependency needs that were never fulfilled by
my caretakers.

Every time I Study my steps, I gain a deeper understanding of how to apply them to my life. I do this because I never learned how the Laws of Life work.  My ‘history’ taught me how to survive.  These survival skills are great tools if I want to continually experience feeling unsafe. Today I know that I live in a friendly Universe and that everything that I experience is for the volution of my soul, not because someone or something wants to hurt me.  So I continue to study so I can gain this knowledge.

I joyfully embrace Practice today (Thank You God).  In the beginning it was hard W-O-R-K and my ego-mind kept trying to distract me so I wouldn’t continue.  It seemed like every time I heard about a different way of responding, when I was faced with the situation, my ego-mind would jump in and I’d react the same way I had always reacted.  My ego-mind kept telling me that I would never learn new behavior – but my Spirit is stronger than my ego and thanks to all of the willing souls who ‘keep coming’ I’ve been guided and now have learned how to practice.  Today I know that working a recovery program is all about practice (“practice these principles in all my affairs”).  I’ll never graduate, any more than I’ll never not have been affected by alcoholism.  I just keep practicing, and yes, I’ll throw gutter balls but they are all part of the practice.  One of the analogies that helped me
understand how to keep putting one foot in front of the other and take these baby steps was about swimming.  I don’t learn to swim by just talking about it, or reading books on swimming.  I have to take action and get in the water and start to practice.  Studying alone, only creates intellectual Faith and Faith without action is useless!

I am so grateful to those who have gone before me. I was taught early on in my recovery to start speaking using “I” messages.  Things like I feel, I need, I want instead of “you”.  This helped me to start to become conscious of my thoughts and how they played out into my actions.  In HLC, when I Internalize I am doing just that.  I speak, write, feel and think in first party.  This practice helps me to internalize all of the meta-knowledge that I have collected over the years.

The result of me committing to my Self journey, studying, practicing and internalizing the knowledge is that I become the message.  I’ve Emotionalized what I have learned into being who I am.  I’ve learned that intellectual knowledge is easier to acquire than emotional knowledge because conceptual thought doesn’t require me to change my behavior.  Emotionalizing is the key to permanent behavioral change.  It’s easy to read the meditations in the daily readers, it’s easy to read other books on recovery, but if I don’t commit to studying, practicing and internalizing this information (being the change I wish to see), then all I’ve gained is more intellectual knowledge.

Thank you for walking these 12 steps with me while I’ve shared how I have bridged together HLC’s HuMethod™ exercises to deepen and enhance this wonderful Spiritual path.  Join me in two weeks as I continue to share how you, too, can apply HLC’s HuMethod™ exercises in your daily Recovery life.

Recovery/ 12-Step Series – Step 11

How to Walk the 12 Steps with the HuMethod™ Article 12

Sought through Prayer and Meditation to improve our conscious contact
with God, Praying Only for the Knowledge of God’s Will
for Us and the Power to Carry that Out and …

Experiencing Transformation

By Certified Life Coach Deborah Giddings

Namasté soul friends,

I find Step 11 to be the most powerful of all of the steps.  When I actively “live” this step, this is where my transformation occurs.  Listen to the words of the second part of this step as you say them…“Praying only for the knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out.”  This really simplified life for me.  No longer did I have to have the answer to everything.  This step, along with the first three, created a beautiful bow to tie on the lovely bag I created to carry all of my steps in.

In this blog I will be using quotes taken from Chapter 10
of The HuMan Handbook (A Guide for the Inner You), which is about Transformation. Throughout this blog, click on the different hyperlinks to view all of the different formats available for this handbook. At the end of this blog there are directions to get a FREE handout of this chapter, along with the Self-Mastery Assignment.

Trans-form-ation means “to go beyond form” to a level of conscious understanding that the real me exists beyond the physical form of my human body.  As I go through this transformational process I incur struggle or creative tension as my ego-mind is trying to preserve separateness and my Spirit is trying to merge into the unity that I am ONE with the Uni-verse (one song).

I am at cause when I create my reality. When I let reality create me, I am playing the “victim” game.  Transformation is only possible after I release my repressed feelings, and transcend my identification of myself as my HuMan roles and identities.  When I am at cause and creating my reality I am free from playing the blame, shame, victim game.  Step 11 shows me how to be at cause and create my reality – “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve my conscious contact with God…”

When I was living my life unconsciously, my life was a futile attempt to feel secure in a dimension that is intrinsically insecure.
Simply stated, I continued to unconsciously, involuntarily replicate the same behavior over and over again and then wonder “Why is this happening?” Today I know that I can be emotionally honest only to the degree that I am conscious.  Practicing Step 11 transforms me until I become conscious.

One of the greatest recovery gifts I have been given is to realize that I live in a friendly Uni-verse, and that the experiences I am creating are being done for me and not to me.  It’s through prayer  and meditation that I came to realize all of my experiences have served the purpose of awakening me to my divine nature. I know that whatever happened to me was ‘perfect’ for the evolution of my soul, even when I didn’t have the foresight or insight to understand why.

“You give up not meditating. It’s called meditation action.
There’s no way out of it. Meditation means to be
Constantly extricating your Self from the clinging of mind.”
Ram Dass

I was taught to believe and accept an identity which is not the real me.  To supersede that belief, I must identify with a new image of myself – one of Godliness, beauty and strength.  By practicing the prayer and meditation exercises as outlined in Step 11, along with understanding of how this Transformation occurs, I can master how to be a “witness-observer” of my dharma and
karma.  I can learn how to watch my dharma and karma unfold from a state of detachment wondering, “How will my incarnate fair with this HuMan dilemma?”   I learn to see the whole world in me instead of seeing myself in the world.

“Live your life in such a way
That those who know you,
But who don’t know God,
Will come to know God,
Because they know you.”

Recovery/12 Step Series – Step 10

How to Walk the 12 Steps with the HuMethod™ Article 11

Continued to take personal inventory
And when we were wrong, promptly admitted it…

By Observing and Correcting my Behavior

By Certified Life Coach Deborah Giddings

Namasté soul friends,

I had the pleasure of going through the Observe & Correct process with someone recently and I just love how the Universe continues to support me in my recovery journey.  I’m not sure if I shared this already, but one of the best things I ever learned in my 12-step program was that I live in a friendly Universe, and that everything that happened was being done for me
and not to me.  Once I finally grok’d this, I knew that the God of my understanding had my back and I started to feel safer in
the world.

It took me some time to get in touch with my Self enough to know when my behavior was “less than perfect”.  I spent the majority of my life unconscious, all the while going at a speed of 80,000,000 rpm.  As long as I had my lists, and life didn’t take one wrong turn, my ego mind told me all was well.  Can you guess how many times a day life does what life does?   As you can imagine, I was being pulled off the ceiling regularly. My unconscious beliefs had me dis-place my anger on anyone or anything that was in my path.  I’ve heard in the rooms that “hurt people, hurt people” and as I started the walk by completing Steps 4-9, I started to become conscious and realized my actions did have an effect on other people.  I wasn’t as invisible as I had wanted
to be.

In order to feel safe, accepted and loved, my ego had me focusing outside of my Self trying to meet other’s needs.  Using my great ‘thinking mind’ my ego told me what everyone else’s needs were, a lot of times before they even knew they had a need.
All I succeeded in doing was building a lot of resentments and completely and totally losing my own identity.  I know today that anything I process through my ‘thinking’ mind is being processed through the disease of alcoholism because my ego-mind has been affected by this disease.

Bridging the HuMethod™ exercise of Observe & Correct with my 10th Step, I am learning to get out of my alcoholic “thinking”
disease and become a witness/observer to my behavior.  This allows me to be more aware of when my behavior is ‘less than perfect’ so, along with the God of my understanding, I can change course and become a conscious director in my life, not just an actor. Just like Step 10, using the Observe & Correct process requires me to integrate all that I’ve been learning and practicing up to this point.

I practiced the Spiritual Distinction Meditation two-three times a day for over a year.  This helped me to get into my body so that I could stay in touch with what my body (Spirit) was telling me.  This form of self-parenting allowed me to feel my healing feelings’ so I could observe what was happening before my ego-mind could distract me and then correct my actions so I  esponded instead of reacted.  As I continued to tune in to my feelings to discover what my Spirit was saying, my Relationships started to change.  My focus was no longer 100% projecting what I reaction I had to take to offset what someone else was doing.  I was able to turn inward to the God of my understanding and communicate with people where they are, not where I am or where I’d like them to be.

The Seven Spiritual Truths keep me on course when my ego-mind tries to distract me.  I know today that “Nothing changes until it becomes what it is – love” and so it is important for me to stay conscious so I can accept “what is” as is and dis-create
(stop creating) what no longer serves me.

Forgiveness is key to this entire process because as long as I’m enmeshed with someone, I continue to take poison while waiting for the other person to die.  When I use this self-protection mechanism, I detach from the pain while getting the gift of being able to remember the lesson.  This helps me to keep from repeating the same behavior over and over again, and expecting a different result.

Practicing how to communicate responsibly has freed me up to Be-Here-Now, in communication with my Spirit so I can communicate with someone else’s Spirit in the present, not the past or future.  My ego has lost its job of keeping tabs and score to make sure that it can protect its boundaries.  Keeping tabs and score on what everyone else did only distracted me from my true purpose – to meet my own emotional dependency needs that weren’t met when I was a child, so that I can feel safe, sane and secure in the world.  Today I accept my Self and my ‘less than perfect behavior’ and take responsibility (respond-with-ability) for my actions.  Thank You God for my program and for the HuMethod™ tools and exercises.

If you would like to get a free hand-out on how to use the Observe & Correct process, please email me at debcoaching11@gmail.com.
